As the "Guide to union catalogues and international loan centres" edited by L. Brummel and E. Egger (The Hague, Nijhoff, 1961) was rather soon out of print, the Committee on Union Catalogues and International Loans resolved to publish a new edition. As, however, the former editors did not want to be responsible for a new edition, the Committee was happy that Dr. Valentin Wehefritz accepted to undertake this task. Like so many others, this international work has suffered from difficulties in obtaining contributions from a number of countries, and thus it was impossible to consider a number of non-European countries which was particularly regrettable in the cases of India and Mexico.
