The Dala1 Lama was born 1n Amdo. Tibel, in 1935 and
at the age of lwo-and-a-half was recognized as the
fourteenlh incarnation in the line of Dalai Lamas.
Revered as the very embodiment of compassion. he
was trained as a monk in Lhasa from the age of five.
Ten years laler, during lhe lurbulenl days of slruggle
against Chinese incursion. he assumed the
responsib1hly of sp1nlual and temporal leadership of his
people.
Since his exile in 1959, Tenzin Gyatso. the
Fourteenth Dalai Lama, has led his governmentin-
exile from the Indian Himalayan town of
Dharamsata. Recognized as one of the greatest living
Buddhist teachers, he has made extensive tours to
every part of the globe not only to teach on all aspects
of Buddhist philosophy and praclice but also lo work
tirelessly for world peace. These efforts were rewarded
in 1989 when His Holiness received the Nobel Peace
Prize.
