سادات جمع سیّد و در لغت عربی در اصل سَیوِد (قبل از اِعلال) بوده و به معنی آقا و سرور است؛ و در اصطلاح عام به کسانی گفته میشود که از طرف پدر از نسل «هاشم» (جد پیامبر اسلام محمد بن عبدالله) باشد یا به عبارتی از قبیله بنی هاشم باشد.
