This dissertation was prepared as a guide to the medieval translations of Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy in England, France, and Germany and to the large body of scholarship they have stimulated. To assure maximal usability, the translations and relevant criticism of each national literature are treated in separate chapters. Because of the hiatus between the Old English and Middle English Consolatio traditions, however, a separate chapter is devoted to each. Each chapter is divided into two parts: one for the major translation of each tradition (Alfred's, Notker's, Jean's, and Chaucer's) and another for the lesser known translations. Each chapter has an introduction which defines the particular Consolatio tradition of which the translations are an important part.

The bibliographical entries number almost three hundred, and each entry is annotated in all sections to which it is relevant. Each chapter section is accompanied by an analysis of the scholarship available on the translations, and an attempt is made to indicate how this scholarship is actually or potentially relevant to comparative studies of the whole European Consolatio tradition. Apart from the compilation of bibliographical data and their annotations, the major contribution of this dissertation is its arrangement of the material within the framework of comparative studies while, at the same time, making the entire body of material available to scholars working within a single tradition.
