Fremdsprachenwoerterbuecher enthalten in der Regel keine Definitionen. Es ist eigentlich sehr schwierig, so ein Buch zu finden. Als Student einer Sprache braucht man gute Definitionen, denn es gibt sehr selten in verschiedenen Sprachen Woerter, die gleich bedeuten. Ich finde die in diesem Buch stehenden Erklaerungen klar und hilfreich. Wenn es mehrere Bedeutungen gibt, sind alle inkludiert. Dieses Buch hilft mir sehr beim Lesen und Schreiben. Langenscheidts "Grosswoerterbuch" ist mir schon ein Glanzstueck geworden. Fuer alle Deutschlerner, die schon zwei Jahre oder so studiert haben, ist dieses Buch eine Notwendigkeit.

Einziges, das fehlt, sind die blauen Diamanten, die sich in anderen Ausgaben (zB die kleineren) befinden. Die zeichen die Woerter, die in der ZDaF-Pruefung (Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache) verwendet sind, also die Woerter, die man gut kennen sollte. Man kann diese Woerter zwar im Internet aussuchen, aber es waere besser, wenn die inkludiert waeren. Ich empfehle euch dennoch, es zu kaufen.

If you're looking for a dictionary with actual definitions, this is one of the only ones you will find. There is a smaller version with about 36,000 words which is cheaper, but you will find those 36,000 words are only rarely sufficient. I had the smaller edition before purchasing the larger. This one, with some 66,000 words, includes virtually everything you will need. _Very_ seldom am I forced to look elsewhere for a definition. The definitions are also very clear. If you are a student of German in your third year+, or a translator, this is the book for you. At that level of language competence, English-German dictionaries will no longer do you any good. Using a book like this also really helps to teach you to think in German, without relating the words back to English, since, naturally, all the definitions are in German.

The one shortcoming I've found is the lack of demarcation of words from the ZDaF test, the most widely recognized certificate of German proficiency. The smaller one _does_ tell you which words are on the test, so you can make special note of them as you come across them. But since you can find the list of ZDaF words online (it changes every year, anyways), this book completely beats out the smaller edition.

Highly recommended for any serious student/translator of the German language.
