‘That profound remark of Saint Gregory of Nyssa, "We remember what is to come", is an anamnesis beyond time, and an epiphanic anamnesis that makes transcendent realities present to us. Hence, we must avoid any rigid attitude which could lapse into simple initiation or imitation of the past; rather open up a new neo-patristic perspective, faithful to the dynamism of the Fathers’ creative spirit. In its wake, our fortifying incorporation into the organism of the Church can transform theological science into experience, ‘a source of the water of life, which will spring even unto eternal life’.” [Excerpt from the author’s introduction]. The ethic of love is greater than the ethic of duties and obligations. Moral obligations, good in themselves, must be surpassed. But only on the condition that we do not lead our religious lives based on Good (an abstract entity) – but on God, a living person, in a revitalizing communion which transforms man. It is not a matter of collecting virtues; rather an evangelical ‘metanoïa’, a total mutation, a metamorphosis of life and the human being. This book presents a path through the work of a man who never ceased to reflect on the mystery of faith and his destiny in the great human adventure. The fruit of his teaching of moral theology at the Institut Saint-Serge between 1950 and 1970, nourished by the living contact of an audience, this work explores vast domains: natural morals; the ethics of the ancient world (Hellenism, Buddhism); the moral conscience of modern systems (Kant, Marx, existentialism); anthropology (of the Fathers of the Church and analytical psychology). The problematic of law and grace, and that of evil, are also analysed. There follows a well-constructed study of liturgy and the church service, the sacraments and their role in moral life, the invisible combat between asceticism and passion. The author intends this book not only for specialists of moral theology, who will discover an orthodox approach, but also for a wider public who wish to learn in the light of a meditation on the Word, which illuminates various aspects of life in its ensemble, beyond the schism between Christians - even between believers and non-believers - to grasp the world in its entirety.
