In Stalinist Rule in the Ukraine, Hryhory Kostiuk supplies the answers to these two all-important, tragic questions. This book, a thorough analysis of a decade of Stalinist terror and repression in the Ukraine, gives a detailed account of the fate suffered by the Ukrainian people, its artists, writers, professors, scientists, civil servants, journalists, and poets, between 1929 and 1939 in the course of the establishment and entrenchment of the dictatorship.
Many books have been written about mass terror in the Soviet Union, but, in the main, these have dealt with the purges and Moscow trials between 1936 and 1938. Yet in the Ukraine and in the other Union republics, the weapon of such terror had been wielded by Stalin as early as 1930, long before the infamous Moscow trials. Stalinist Rule in the Ukraine furnishes important new knowledge about a chapter in the history of man's inhumanity to man of which too little is known new knowledge indispensable to our understanding of Stalinist methods and aims. The book tells of the establishment of Soviet centralism, the consolidation of Stalin's dictatorship, and of the destruction of Ukrainian national and social life. It tells of the murder, imprisonment,
and disappearance of Ukrainian writers, artists, actors, end scholars. It tells of the subjugation and destruction of institutions of higher education and scientific research. It tells of tHe purge of the Communist Party of the Ukraine, its Central Committee, and the Soviet Ukrainian government. It tells of the assignment given to one Nikita S. Khrushchev to take over the Ukraine and of how he distinguished himself in carrying out this task.
