The quarrel of the Romance of the Rose develops at the beginning of the nineteenth century between some important personalities connected to the university (Jean Gerson), to the chancellery (Jean de Montreuil) and to the court (Christine de Pizan). They discuss about the romance worth, its conformity to the moral and its nature supposedly considered obscene. Since the context is that of the first Humanism and one of the protagonists is generally represented as the “first woman of letters” in France, the quarrel has acquired a symbolic meaning. First of all it has been seen as a conflict between the traditional moral and the followers of new needs but also a conflict between the first “feminist” and the male power. Finally it has also claimed the autonomy of literature.

This work takes an overview of the critical bibliography about the quarrel, analysing it from the early nineteenth century until today. The aim of this survey is to give readers an instrument in order to simplify the study of the quarrel. The titles are classified according to their contents and their interest (editions and translations, historical and literary studies, studies about the debate’s participants and about specific literary features). The titles are followed by a short critical analysis. A chronological table and the alphabetical index enable the meticulous search.

A final summary give the possibility to have a complete vision of the path followed by the critics.
