The presence of Antiquity in medieval culture and literature, particularly in Le Roman de la Rose, has been recognized for quite some time by different scholars such as Jean Seznec and Armand Strubel. This thesis studies the presence of Antiquity within Le Roman de la Rose through mythology and it takes into account both parts of the literary work, the first one written by Guillaume de Lorris and the second one written by Jean de Meun.

This thesis studies the relationship between the myth and the medieval culture within the work. The presence of mythology is present through characters and personifications directly borrowed from Antiquity and the direct insertion of myths within the story. This shows the blurry borders between classical and medieval cultures. In Le Roman de la Rose, classical and mediaeval cultures live side by side.
