Spengler's last work published in his lifetime, The Hour of Decision was composed soon after the rise of Hitler and the NSDP to power, and banned by the Third Reich authorities not long afterwards.
While viewing violence and tragedy as inevitable parts of human life, Spengler was also an open critic of reliance on brute force, anti-semitism and prevailing racism.
Spengler's interest is in "race that one has, not a race to which one belongs. The one is ethos, the other - zoology. [.....] Those who talk too much about race no longer have it in them."
Patently wrong at some points, and stunningly prophetic in other aspects, Spengler's work has something of the character of an unpolished gem.
