This research proposes that the roles of these new technologies are not limited to simple communication and representational tools. Current research shows that they are also used as information tools during the conception process, thereby allowing the users to take into account a number of different factors during the creation of an architectural space. The research attempts to demonstrate that the appropriation of the heritage aspects of a site is possible during the conception process.
This study proposes models that contribute to the understanding of the role of the heritage aspects of a site in the creative process, integrating themes related to heritage as identified in the proposal, and facilitating the selection of a site to meet the proposal's requirements, whilst facilitating an understanding of its heritage.
The site chosen is the historic city of Byblos in Lebanon. In considering this case study, we have created models using digital simulation methods. These models are particularly useful to integrate the specific heritage aspects of a site, so as to respond to the demands of the site's architectural and spatial creator. The digital models presented have a dynamic, interactive and renewable character and use a multidisciplinary approach. The experiences are then performed and tested within a collective work space.
The approach allows for a verification of the research hypothesis, which claims that it is possible to simulate digital models pertaining to the comprehension of a heritage site. This allows the spatial creator to take into account notions of heritage during the conception process. The results obtained demonstrate that ICT's can contribute to the improvement and evolution of the conception process of an architectural space having heritage character. These results can serve as a basis for the initiation of other projects dealing with the spatial conception of a site which requires that its heritage character be taken into account.
This research contributes to both the development of the latest comprehensive digital modeling systems, which aid designers preoccupied with heritage concerns to realize their architectural spaces, and to the development of new tools of conception linked to ICT's where the creation of new places facilitates an exchange of knowledge using a multidisciplinary approach. The results of this research also allow for the development of tools geared towards educating youth on the importance of their heritage while simultaneously teaching them how to care for it.
Making use of the latest evolutions in the Web - Web 2.0 and new approaches in the management of the Web's content, this research provides the required knowledge needed to create new systems of heritage management through proposed collaborative work spaces using the new information and communication technologies.
