English Description:
A great biblical poem. Inspired by the highest truths, Milton entrusts us with his religious, political and social ideas. No one like Milton has placed the human creature at the center of the universe. But not even to him Adam is the central character but Satan. The fallen angel's rebellion becomes glorious. For the first time in this work is an exaltation of man to sin and an apology for revolt already foreshadowing romantic Satanism. Translation by Conceição G. Sotto Maior.
Manoel Bandeira's tribute to the translator:
Mr. Manoel Bandeira offered the Academy, on behalf of the author, a translation of "Paradise Lost", saying that "anyone who has read Milton's work in the original knows that translating it is the task of frightening a giant. But Mrs. Conceição Sotto Maior was not frightened, and for three years he fought with courage and patience in this "wild jungle" of difficulties, now presenting us with the results of his efforts - the excellent and vigorous translation into prose of the religious epic masterpiece. The work honors the Brazilian female intelligence, and it is with fading that I transmit it to the Academy.
