of the theory and methodology of Indo-European linguistics, from its
origins two centuries ago to the present. The standard handbooks on the
topic are both out-of-date and are not available in English. Accordingly the
theoretical approaches of the leading authorities in the field have remained
largely unknown, and it is generally assumed that linguistic theory, particu-
larly in syntax, was not discovered until this generation. Lehmann makes
this material accessible by providing an outline of the theories underlying
these handbooks and presenting the current status of Indo-European
linguistics. He examines the latest advances, notably by Soviet scholars in
the area of typology, which have improved not only our understanding of
Proto-Indo-European speakers and their background, but have important
implications for further studics in the field. He also provides a succinct
account of the phonology, morphology and syntax of pre- and Proto-Indo-
European. This unique analysis shows the development of various prob-
lems and approaches tn historical perspective as well as applying and
exploring current linguistic findings and theory in this area.
It will be invaluable to specialists in Proto-Indo-European and the early
dialects as well as for archaeologists seeking clues to the early location of
the Indo-Europeans.
Winfred P. Lehmann is Louann and Larry Temple Professor Emeritus in
