La quantità dei testi, l'estensione cronologica della documentazione e la grande varietà tipologica delle lingue in contatto nell'area mediterranea consentono di mettere alla prova le teorie e le tecniche più aggiornate in tema di correlazioni fra la storia delle società e l'evoluzione delle lingue: greco e latino soprattutto, in tutte le loro fasi, ma anche l'aramaico palestinese dei tempi di Gesù, l'arabo e l'ebraico, le lingue dell'Anatolia antica, fino all'italiano e alle lingue romanze. Il volume raccoglie i risultati di una ricerca su "Mutamento e contatto tra varietà nella diacronia linguistica del Mediterraneo", cui hanno partecipato le università di Bergamo, Roma "Sapienza", Siena "Stranieri", Trieste e Viterbo "Tuscia".
