جزییات کتاب
The purpose of the book is to "examine the structure of wisdom thinking in Ben Sira as well as what he says about wisdom" (p. 174), and the author does that very well. His procedure is to analyze a series of pericopes in the book, the main ones being 1:1-10, the opening poem in praise of wisdom; Chapter 24, a longer and pivotal praise; 14:20-15:10, where wisdom is a desirable bride; and 39:14c-39:35 and 42:15-43:33, two texts dealing with creation. In most cases he presents his translation of the text and then a discussion of text-critical and translation issues. Next he analyzes the literary structure of the text, and finally he discusses the meaning, significance, and theology of the text. There are very helpful summaries at the end of each of the two primary (out of three) sections of the book and a concluding summary at the end. The discussion of Chapter 24 is of key importance, making up about a third of the book, and Marböck relates discussions of other sections back to Chapter 24. Throughout, he keeps up a running argument against Josef Haspecker, who had published a well-received study of Ben Sira in the 1960s which argued that Ben Sira's main theme was the fear of God. Marböck presents convincing evidence that, while piety was very important for Ben Sira, his main theme is the right understanding of and the pursuit of wisdom.
