As a result of the ever increasing use of electronic systems, radiated susceptibility tests are becoming more and more important. Computers and other electronic devices are used to control many different functions in the industry and other parts of our society. Some of these control systems work without supervision and malfunctions due to electromagnetic disturbances could be disastrous.
A number of standards, national as well as international, describe general methods for testing and set limit values applicable when evaluating electronics under the influence of electromagnetic disturbances. The civilian standards, however, only deal with radiated electromagnetic disturbances in the frequency range up to 500 MHz [1]. Extension of the frequency range up to 1 GHz is discussed and a proposal for testing at 2.45 GHz (microwave ovens) was recently presented. The military standards on the other hand, describe test methods [2] and give limit values [3] all the way up to 40 GHz. The limit values given in the military standard MIL-SID-461 are chosen from the expected levels within a system. The limit values will therefore not represent the field strengths for a whole system due to external sources.
