In 1960, on the initiative of Vice Chancellor Charles H. Peake, the University of Pittsburgh instituted an annual series of public lectures by noted philosophers of science along with a doctoral program in the philosophy and history of science. By covering various current topics in the philosophy of the physical, biological, and social sciences, these lectures are intended to contribute to the removal of existing barriers to the flow of ideas between diverse fields of knowledge. The philosophy of science draws on the results of major scientific theories and endeavors to interpret, and to contribute to the conceptual innovations wrought by some of the fundamental advances in the sciences. Thus, it promotes the scientific education of students of the humanities no less than the humanistic education of scientists.
