Our parasympathetic nervous system and the vagus nerve specifically, play a crucial part in how we feel physically and emotionally. We rely on the vagus nerve to be a feedback loop to the brain, to alert the central nervous system to any ongoing issues.
Discomfort is our body’s way of telling us something isn’t quite right, and your vagus nerve is a significant component of sensing discomfort. Discomfort can trigger vagus nerve irritation.
Fear can also stimulate the vagus nerve into a negative response. Anything that gets our heart beating rapidly irritates the vagus nerve, which tries to send signals to the heart to slow down and regulate itself. When your heart rate drops rapidly after these signals, it can cause fainting. For some people, this can be a debilitating issue that affects their daily lives.
Irritation or malfunction of the vagus nerve can cause a host of issues when it comes to pain, depression, and anxiety. The nerve is supposed to send a signal to the brain to release anti-inflammatory chemicals, and when it’s not working as it should, some people can see a rise in joint pain and irritation.
Similarly, people who are depressed or deal with anxiety may not see a relief in their symptoms if the vagus nerve is malfunctioning, and the stress of that may, in turn, worsen those conditions.
