early 1890s, spreading rapidly to hundreds of major
urban centres in the succeeding two decades before
collapsing, as quickly as it had started, in the years
running up to World War I. This lavishly illustrated
volume deals with Art Nouveau as an international
phenomenon, and is the most complete and wide-
ranging study to be published so far.
Pulling together a huge number of sources, the book
explores how the artists and designers who created
Art Nouveau aimed to transform their world, by
challenging convention and embracing modernity.
Controversial and often provocative at the time,
masterpieces such as Tiffany lampshades,
Mucha posters and Lalique jewellery are examples
of how all the fine and decorative arts, including
glass, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, sculpture, print
and textiles, were used to breathtaking effect.
The enormous impact of Art Nouveau right across __
Europe and America, from Paris to New York, Moscow
to Brussels, Chicago to Helsinki, Prague to Barcelona,
is also explored, revealing how the extraordinary
facades and highly decorative interiors affected
many people’s lives. The style’s dramatic demise
is examined in a brief final section.
Featuring some of the most remarkable examples
of Art Nouveau — some collected by the V&A at the
time the style was flourishing — the illustrations include
works from many museums and private collections,
worldwide. The careers of leading figures such as
Aubrey Beardsley, Emile Gallé, Antoni Gaudi, Josef
Hoffmann, Victor Horta, Charles Rennie Mackintosh,
Louis Sullivan, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Henry van
de Velde are analysed, making this the most
comprehensive reference volume available.
Masterpieces in all media are represented, superbly
illustrated, while period photography, much of it not
reproduced since its original appearance, provides
a glorious visual context.
The book includes contributions from twenty leading
scholars in the field, and is published to coincide
with a major exhibition at the V&A, London, and the
National Gallery of Art, Washington.
