The aim of this book is clearly set out as a linguistic, form-critical and synthetic examination of a major wisdom genre — the Admonition. Specifically, it is concerned with the structure and the interpretation (“ethos”, p. 3) of admonitions that make up a considerable part of the Book of Proverbs, and the author works to a very clear and logical pattern, beginning (after a brief and perhaps unnecessary definition of “wisdom”) with an examination of language and structure, and going on to a more speculative (and one feels, more personal) general conclusion.
The first introductory chapter is an effort at drawing the boundaries of what is usually called “the Wisdom of the Old Testament”, and here in fact nothing new is added to a debate that has become quite critical in recent years. N. suggests that wisdom’s most pronounced characteristic is its educational scope — a commonly held idea, though one questions if this is adequate to such books as Job or Qoheleth. There is no doubt, however, that it is certainly valid for Proverbs, and that is the author’s concern here.
