AUTHORISED HISTORY OF
HAMMER FILMS
From the 1930s to the mid-50s, Hammer was just another small
British film production company, turning out routine B-movies. Then,
in 1957, that all changed... The Curse of Frankenstein and, a year
later, Dracula, ushered in a whole new era of blood and barely
restrained cleavage in colour, mixing sex and horror with a style and
panache that made the films world famous. More than seventy horror,
science fiction, prehistoric adventure and thriller films emerged from
the company during the next twenty years, and Hammer firmly
established itself as master of the genres.
Now, to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of their first Gothic horror
film, The Curse of Frankenstein, Hammer have given their active
backing to this authorised history of the company, and have provided
unlimited access to their archives. The crypt doors have been thrown
wide open, revealing a treasure chest of over 450 rare posters,
photographs, press books, clippings and even ticket stubs.
The authors invite you to join them on a journey through the history
of Hammer, including an illustrated commentary on over sixty key
films, articles on Hammer's non-horror movies and TV work, special
features on the stars, the technicians and the studio, and a
comprehensive filmography of every film and TV series produced
by Hammer to date.
