Sesenta años se cumplen de la aparición, en 1956, de La filosofía náhuatl estudiada en sus fuentes. Bien lo anticipó en su prólogo Ángel María Garibay K.: “Un hecho es indudable. Este libro no caerá en el olvido”. Once ediciones tiene en español y otras en inglés, ruso, alemán, francés y checo. Su tesis central sigue siendo tomada en cuenta: en el México prehispánico —como lo muestran los textos en náhuatl aquí analizados— hubo quienes se plantearon preguntas como éstas: ¿podemos decir palabras verdaderas en la tierra?, ¿qué hay después de la muerte?, ¿qué es el tiempo?, ¿qué sabemos de la divinidad?, ¿somos acaso libres? y ¿qué es lo bueno y lo malo? Al igual que el arte de Mesoamérica provoca grande admiración, lo que conocemos de su literatura y pensamiento aviva el aprecio hacia los indígenas, antiguos y de hoy, creadores y mantenedores de un universo de cultura.

Sixty years have passed since the appearance, in 1956, of La filosofía náhuatl estudiada en sus fuentes. Ángel María Garibay K. anticipated it very well in his prologue: “Un hecho es indudable. Este libro no caerá en el olvido” (“Something is unquestionable. This book will not be consigned to oblivion”). There are eleven editions in Spanish of this book and some more in English, Russian, German, French, and Czech. Its central proposition is still being taken into account: in the pre-Hispanic Mexico —as the texts in Nahuatl here analysed show it— there were people who asked questions like these: can we say true words on Earth?, what comes after death?, what is time?, what do we know about divinity?, are we free?, and what is good and what is evil? Just as Mesoamerican art provokes great admiration, what we know about Mesoamerican literature and thought heightens the esteem for the indigenous people —the ones from the past and the ones from the present—, creators and keepers of a cultural universe.
