Principal Narhar Ambadas Kurundkar (1932-1982) was one of the leading intellectuals of modern Maharashtra.
He wrote extensively and prolifically on a wide variety of topics, ranging from Indian aesthetics and the Manusmriti to secularism in India and similar other themes. Pathways to a Progressive India (Vata Tuzha Mazha) is his responses to a series of questions, on issues and problems facing modern India, that were posed to him by the Rashtra Seva Dal, a socialist-leaning organisation with which he was intimately associated for a long time.

The purpose of this question-andanswer session was to assist the Seva Dal activists in formulating their stances on these very issues
and problems. Kurundkar’s answers
are, in a sense, the essence of his world-view. His analysis of the character of Indian nationalism, the communal question in India, the changing nature of party politics and last but not the least, his assessment of national figures, will no doubt provide intellectual strength to all those who seek a way out of these dark and troubled times
