Focusing on a crucial episode in Cuban history—the Revolution of 1933—Professor Aguilar describes the social, economic, and political forces that formed Cuban nationalism, and shows that ideas, attitudes, and programs that seemed to originate with Fidel Castro’s revolution actually began in 1933. He explores for the first time the early influence of the Communist party, and he sheds new light on the interventionist role of the United States government, seriously questioning the actions of American diplomats in Havana.

Based upon extensive and original research in Cuban and American official documents, newspapers, and magazines, as well as on personal observation and interviews, the book analyzes the 1933 Revolution in terms of its accomplishments, frustrations, and effects on the entire Cuban national structure. Professor Aguilar corrects previous interpretations of Cuba’s political history by showing that Cuba had already entered into a revolutionary period by the middle of the 1920’s from which it emerged deeply and radically transformed, and he ends his story in 1953 with Castro’s abortive coup.
