جزییات کتاب
The catalogue entitled 'Medieval Village' comprises papers delivered at the international history conference of the same name, which took place at Padise in May 2009.
As most of the studies and discussions about the Middle Ages are usually dedicated to medieval urban life, the organizers of the conference Medieval Village set as the main aim to speak about research into medieval rural areas. Padise seemed to be a suitable place for the starting point of discussions: traces of the Middle Ages are visible here in the form of ruins; yet, they have not been carefully investigated and therefore raise questions.
Articles focus first on history in general speaking about relations of the north-western coast of Estonia with South Finland in the Middle Ages, continuing with a closer look at art history, taking the reader on a tour of art and architectural history of Padise Monastery. Three articles from Danish, Swedish and Finnish historians give us an idea about the meaning of Padise Monastery as well as the Middle Ages in Estonia in European context. The article about the Danish Cistercian monastery in Øm speaks about Cistercians’ life in the Middle Ages and the sources that have enabled us to study it. On the basis of excavations carried out at medieval burial sites in Central and Southern Finland an article has been written about children’s life in the Middle Ages. A survey of the excavations at Gubbacka village site in South Finland gives the reader a chance to observe the story of the rediscovery of a medieval village.
