A new fascicule of 'The Archaeology of York' is a welcome event, and this third part of Volume 17, 'The Small Finds', displays the same high standards of scholarship and presentation that one associates with the publications of the York Archaeological Trust. 'Anglo-Scandinavian Finds from Lloyds Bank, Pavement, and Other Sites' was compiled and largely written by Arthur MacGregor, although (in his own words) it is 'the accounts of the textiles given by Mr. Hedges and Miss Walton and the complementary reports of Dr. Muthesius and Dr. Ryder' which constitute its 'major new contribution to the archaeology of this period'. It is their work on the woollens and a silk fragment that forms the core of this report, for few of the other finds can be said to have merited detailed description or discussion — with the exception of a group from the Lloyds Bank site that is concerned with leatherworking and its finished products (shoes, scabbards and a harness-fitting).
