Spatial interaction is a broad term which encompases a variety of interests such as
shopping trips, journeys to work, migration and airline passenger movements. This book
is concerned wih understanding the basis of spatial interaction and with predicting and
analysing a variety of spatial flows.

The book consists of two sections: the first, 'Formulations', in which the reader is
introduced to the various mathematical and theoretical issues that arise in the
investigation of spatial interaction; the second is entitled 'Applications', in which
detailed examples are presented of the use of spatial interaction modelling to problems
such as forecasting patronage at a new store, examining the impacts of migration,
forecasting the optimal location of new facilities, investigating the impacts of airline
hubs, and network design.

The book is intended to be a practical guide to spatial interaction modelling and could
therefore be of interest to a wide audience, as well as being a potential text to senior
undergraduate and graduate courses. It will be useful to those interested in spatial
flow modelling in fields such as geography, marketing, transportation, planning,
demography and operations research.
