This monograph is intended primarily as a textbook for students of numerical analysis and computer science. It started from teaching a senior graduate course in numerical analysis at Stanford University with a textbook that devoted almost no attention to matrix problems. Its author advised the reader to expect suitable programs at the computation center and to consult an expert if he got into trouble. In contrast, we believe that students need to understand matrix programs in order to apply them or modify them in unanticipated situations. Moreover, many of our students later write or translate programs for computation centers. To fill the gap, notes were prepared for a unit on matrix computation, and part of those notes has grown into the present monograph. The prerequisites, detailed in Sec. 1, include a course in linear algebra and some knowledge of programmIng.
