Nine studies examine the pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, the reputed burial place of St. James and one of the most visited shrines in medieval Europe. They discuss the religious ambiance in the 12th century and the cult of St. James, the theme of the pilgrimage in 13th-century Spanish literature, its representation in a 15th-century Flemish altarpiece, the observations and reactions of a 15th-century German visitors, the use of the saint's emblem in Scandinavia, virtual pilgrimage on the World Wide Web, and other facets.
