This volume is a record of what was said at the conference on 'Computers and Old English Concordances', arranged by the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto and held on the weekend of 21 and 22 March 1969. The sessions of the conference were recorded and transcribed from tapes; these transcriptions were then edited by the original speakers, who were asked to limit their alterations to minor changes so that the published proceedings would represent as nearly as possible what was said. Only the chairmen’s explanatory remarks have been abbreviated.
We hope that, as well as being the record of an occasion, this volume will be of interest and use to all who are concerned with lexicography and the use of computers in the humanities. Although the specific subject of the conference was Old English, the proceedings do have a relevance to any application of computers to the study of language and literature. For this reason, the table of contents lists specifically all the major papers and reports and the discussion of them.
