Accordingly, in the general fund of traditional Indian philosophy, ideas and attitudes going against them are viewed as the dead-weight of the past. Nevertheless as utilised by the forces of reaction and revivalism-with or without the patronage of the neocolonialists-they try to frustrate the present Indian progress, as they always did in ancient and medieval India. With the ruthless exposure of their actual social function, the author insists that they can as well be fought today largely in Indian terms and with full sanction - of the Indian national pride, for the Indian thinkers, with their long search for truth, do not bequeath posterity only with such deceits and false leads.
In view of the vastness and technicalities of the Indian philosophical heritage-and in these anxious days in which Indian philosophy is sought to be used in the grim political game going on-the analysis of what is living and what is dead in the Indian philosophical tradition requires much more than ease and safety uggests. But the author combines in himself superb technical competence with uncompromising commitment to social responsibility. Besides, with no fascination for scholasticism or jargonmongering, he tells the story of the ideological struggle in ancient and medieval India with a fascinating clarity of thought and expression, which makes it most attractive even to those for whom this may be the first book on Indian philosophy.
