In this book Melman makes the case that the US economy is driven by a condition of permanent war, whether or not there are actual hostilities ongoing. He describes the internal mechanisms of the military industrial complex, the revolving door of political, military, and industry profits, and ultimately makes the case for a post-military economy and society.
Written in 1974, it captures antiwar and anticorporate Left-wing intellectual trends that were shaped by the Vietnam War, and is an attempt in so many ways to prevent a future Vietnam. Needless to say, it didn't work, probably because no one read it or did anything about it.
