"The Roots of Fascist and National Socialist Action" is the title of a lecture that Fritz Bauer gave in 1960 to representatives of youth associations with an exceptionally large response. It is a critical contribution to fascism and National Socialism by an honorable and contentious anti-fascist.

Bauer refuses to accept the view that the German people were the victims of a few Nazi ideologues and leaders who seized the country partly by force and partly by manipulation. Rather, the author identifies among the Germans a historically long-established subject mentality, a will to obey and perform one's duty without regard for morality and humanity, and a self-imposed victimhood of external conspiracies that prepared the fertile ground for National Socialism to take root and rage so successfully in Germany. He blames this mindset on various developments, mentalities, and personalities from politics, the church, philosophy, etc., and deliberately does not stop at great figures in German history such as Frederick the Great or Bismarck.
