The issue of the nations in Revelation—whether John envisions their salvation or destruction—has been treated at length in monographs and commentary literature. Scholarly views on the issue range from extreme (total destruction) to extreme (universal salvation), with some mediating positions in between. However, previous studies have neglected to situate the nations within Revelation’s larger plot and in interaction with other narrative characters.
This monograph tackles the issue anew by employing narrative categories and asking four research questions: (1) What is John’s story of the nations? (2) How does he tell it? (3) What is John’s message to the nations? And (4) What is John’s message to the church concerning the nations? One of the animating principles guiding this project is that character cannot be understood as an abstraction but must be rather discovered sequentially in the development of the entire narrative.
