“‘The word kåñ is the attractive feature of the Lord’s existence, and ëa means spiritual pleasure.
When the verb kåñ is added to the suffix ëa, it becomes “Kåñëa,” which indicates the Absolute
Truth.’” 1
The word bhü in bhü-väcakaù is formed by applying the kåt suffix [k]vi[p] in the sense of bhäva (“the
meaning of the verbal root”).2 The meaning of the verbal root kåñ is äkarñaëa (“to attract”).
Moreover, in kåñëa, the uëädi suffix na[k] is applied in kartari prayoga (“the active voice”). Thus the
word kåñëa refers to the Absolute Truth who has a humanlike form and who first attracts and then
gives bliss.3 In this regard, Näma-kaumudé, a book written by Lakñmédhara Paëòita, says: kåñëa-
çabdasya tamäla-çyämala-tviñi yaçodäyäù stanan-dhaye para-brahmaëi rüòhiù (“The word kåñëa is
conventionally the name of the Supreme Brahman whose complexion is dark blue like a tamäla tree
and who sucks the breast of Mother Yaçodä”).
