The purpose of this thesis is to present a context and background to the practical design aspect of my work. I considered this project to be an experiential journey in search of a way to make Wagner's Parsifal relevant and interesting in relation to my own life and personal sensibilities. My aim was to use the music as my guide and my hope was to reach a scenographic solution by following my intuition. This project has been an important step in my development as an artist and designer and I feel it has strengthened the bond between my conscious and subconscious mind, giving me the confidence to trust my feelings and harness them to come up with innovative interpretations translated into inventive designs. My meaning of Parsifal as a journey from ignorance to enlightenment is represented in the three acts of the opera. Each act is a stage of this development and symbolically they also represent the three realms of existence; the mind, the body and the soul. The first act is about civilization, reason and order. The second is about instinct and the awakening of emotions. The third act is a union of the two, represented by nature as an exterior manifestation of the landscape within.
