Excerpt from the Preface:

The basic organization of this book is provided by a narrative of political events. For so long and varied a period of history, no other organization of a survey has seemed more valuable. However, to the extent that all books on the same subject are inevitably different, this one differs from other surveys of medieval history in devoting relatively more space to medieval civilization and culture. Many names and factual details - important or interesting for a more intensive study of one or another aspect of the Middle Ages - have been jettisoned in favor of a more extensive treatment of the major features and characteristics of the origin, growth, culmination, and decline of a distinctive civilization, a civilization on which our modern Western civilization is directly based. Illustrations and maps have been selected and drawn for the specific purpose of illustrating remarks in the text, and hence the maps are intended to show only the location of place names, geographical areas, or territories actually referred to in the text.
