Nil Sorskij will remain always in the annals of Russian hagiography as a perfect example of complete dedication to the all-important task, of self-sanctification. His spirituality will remain a mystery, grossly impractical, unless one understands Nil’s attitude of complete dedication to a lifetime of contemplation.
Never officially canonized by the Russian Church, he always was a favorite among the simple Russian Christians, as well as for the more contemplative-inclined monks; both groups found in his treatise on “mental activity” or his Ustav a unique source of spiritual richness. Yet his greatness lies not in that he put in writing an ideal common to one race of people and to none other, but rather lies precisely in the universality of that ideal.
