Modern men and women go about their lives without really knowing why. Why do we work for such a long time every day? Why are we so obsessed with technology? Why do we continuously construct scandals? جفری سی. الگساندر ، از مشهورترین جامعهشناسان آمریکایی دورهٔ معاصر و از اساتید فعلی دانشگاه ییل است. او در جامعهشناسی رویکرد کارکردگرایی نوین را از اواسط دهه ۱۹۸۰ در مقابل کارکردگرایی ساختاری تالکوت پارسونز پایهگذاری کرد. الگزاندر چندین برنامهٔ پژوهشی در چهارچوب «جامعهشناسی فرهنگی» را به ثمر رساند و برخی از کُدهای فرهنگی را در موضوعات مختلف ازجمله تکنولوژی کامپیوتر، سیاستهای محیطی، پیدایش جنگ، رسوایی واترگیت و جامعه مدنی به کار گرفت.
