In his preface to the first volume of the Mechanics Series of Euler's Opera omnia, Paul Stäckel wrote in 1912 that only through this great new edition would it become possible to gain a clear picture of the enormous activity of Euler in the entire field of mechanics. The memoirs in the present volume would eternize Euler among the greatest geometers, had he written nothing else. The might of his researches on fluids will be apprehended more readily in our day, when generality and principle are beginning to heal the ulcers of materialism, than in Stäckel's. However, many present working scientists have neither the leisure nor the tongues to find their own way in the originals. For this reason I append here not only a description of the circumstances of the works but also extensive summaries of their contents. To aid the reader who would learn for himself and verify my assertions, I retain as far as practical the original letters for quantities, but use modern symbols for mathematical operations. Each author's own words, somewhat compacted, are his witnesses. Where confusion might arise, I have put my explanations or comments in square brackets.
