The automobile industry is of key importance to Western economies, but analysts have failed to relate the international expansion of the industry to national policies and the structure of markets. The book develops an account of the transformation of the division of labour within the automobile industry, discussing why firms are motivated to shift manufacturing as well as research and development into different types of region and what the connections are between the supplier base and the public sector.
