This book is a revised version of a dissertation, mentored by Dr. Ludwig Schmidt. Seiler proposes to examine the contrasting positions of Leonhard Rost (Die Überlieferung von der Thronnachfolge Davids [BWANT 3; Stuttgart: Kohlhammer, 1926) and Ernst Würthwein (Die Erzählung von der Thronfolge Davids, theologische oder politische Geschichtsschreibung? [ThStud 115; Zurich: Theologischer Verlag, 1974]) on the unity and purpose of the history of the succession to David's throne (2 Samuel 9-20; 1 Kings 1-2). Rost argues for a largely unified work written to glorify Solomon and to justify his succession to the Davidic throne. Würthwein maintains that the original work was strongly opposed to the Davidic and Solomonic dynasty, and that a subsequent redactor, who was much in favor of the dynasty, substantially reworked the original by adding many sections favorable to David and Solomon.
