Why?
1] The author has used aerial photos of the time and superimposed the locations of units on them; this enables you to spatially fix the units on the map, in relation to the narrative.
2] he also uses contemporary maps to do the same, so linked with 1] it enhances the understanding of the narrative even more.
3] And he has photos of parts of the battlefield as they are today, this again helps see the terrain from the soldiers' perspective and you can see why attacks just ground to a halt in some places or became death traps.
4] The narrative includes extracts from personal accounts, which adds human interest to it.
5] He clearly has researched the unit histories and war diaries extensively; this allows a very good descriptive text to develop an understanding of how the battle unfolded.
6] He has gone to the trouble to explain how to read the maps, which is a great as not everyone knows how to read a map.
7] His appendices are exceptional, not the usual, rank equivalent ones, which are always so wrong, but ones describing tactics, the units etc.
The author has from the extensive research that he clearly has done, has a depth of knowledge of the operation that allows him to write about it in a very informative, interesting, with clarity way, and allows the reader to get a true grip on the fighting and conceive an appreciation of the terrain without having to trudge around those fields of Normandy.
The series are absolute gems of well written books and are a total must for anyone interested in this D-Day operation. So are his other two books in the series, Epsom and Bluecoat.
